Padma Shri Rajinder Singh Bedi a colossus in the field of Urdu Literature straddled 3 mediums - Cinema, Radio and Literature effortlessly. He began his career in Lahore writing plays for All India Radio. Consequently he came out with a book on short stories in urdu- Grahan, Daan o Daam, Kokhjali. Apney Dukh Mujhey Dey Do.

In the field of Urdu Literature he is best know for his novella- Ek Chadar Maili Si.

His foray as a dialogue writer for films began with Bimal Roy's Devdas, Madhumati, Hrishikesh Mukherjees Abhimaan and Satyakam. Bedi went on to write scores of films for which he received innumerable awards and then branched into film making with Dastak , which won Sanjeev Kumar, Rehana Sultana and the music director Madan Mohan , National Awards.

After Dastak he directed Phagun , another landmark film starring Jaya Bachchan and Waheeda Rahman

Rajinder Singh Bedi received a host of awards in his long career as a writer and creator. He was conferred the Padma Shri by the Govt Of India and the Sahitya Academy Award , India’s most coveted award in Literature. The Indian Film Industry awarded him Filmfare trophies for Best Dialogue for his films- Devdas, Madhumati , Satyakam.

Today he is remembered for the dialogue of Devdas , till date considered the most iconic- kaun kambhakt bardasht karne ke liye peeta hain, main toh peeta hoon taqi saans le sakoon!

The son of Rajinder Singh Bedi, Narendra Bedi embarked on a career as a film maker with GP Sippy’s Bandhan with stalwarts Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz top lining his debut film after which there was no looking back for this young director.

Narinder Bedi went on to give jubilee hits with Jawani Diwani, Rafoo Chakkar, Adalat, Benaam, Khotey Sikkey, and Sanam Teri Kasam.

His film Benaam , a taut thriller , starring Amitabh Bachchan , is till date considered a ground breaking film, far ahead of its time.

Narender Bedi was one of the rare breed of Indian film makers who didn’t confine himself to any one genre- from family dramas, to comedy, to westerns, to love stories, to thrillers, his repertoire ran the entire gamut. With his untimely demise in 1982 at the age of 47, he couldn’t partake in the joy of seeing RD Burman receive his first ever Filmfare trophy for Best Music Director for the film Saman Teri Kasam directed by him. Weeks after his demise Saman Teri Kasam was declared a hit.
